Introduction: I fooled my first thermostable machine.

Purchased it with the thought, “Espresso in thirty seconds? Definitely yes!

And sure, it was quick. Extremely quick.

 Then followed the burnt shots, sour pulls, and no crema days.


That was when I discovered that although thermoblock espresso makers are handy, they have certain drawbacks. Still, also They are simply misinterpreted, not all horrible.

Let me dissect what I wish I knew when I started with thermoblocks.


Chapter 1: Definition of a Thermoblock Espresso Maker

A thermoblock is a heating element that circulates small amounts of water through a metal coil or block quickly heating them.

It is really quick to heat only what you need instead of heating a whole boiler of water, so saving energy.

Second Chapter: How Does It Work?

The basic form is:

    One starts with cold water from the reservoir entering an aluminium or stainless block.

    4. Ready for espresso, it leaves at about 90–95°C.



Some sophisticated models even combine several thermoblocks—one for espresso, one for steam.


Chapter 3: Advantues of Thermoblock Espresso Machines

Particularly for casual users, they have some legitimate advantages: fast heat-up (30 to 60 seconds); compact and light; lower power usage; no need for pressure-release valves; great for one-cup-at—a-time consumers.


Ideal for offices where space is premium, compact kitchens, or house configurations where space = luxury.


Chapter 4: Drawbacks of Thermoblock Systems

Let’s keep it realistic though; they are not without imperfections:

❌ Inconsistent temperature: That lovely 93°C steadiness cannot be constantly obtained. In poor steam power, frothing milk is… meh ❌ Risk of overheating: Should you back off consecutive shoots ❌ Limited pressure control; usually fixed at a 9-bar pump


And for those who specialise in espresso—like me?

 They generally lack PID control, preinfusion, or pressure profiling.

Basically:

Chapter 6: Thermoblock Approach for Making Good Espresso

Indeed, but it will take work.

I improved in the following ways:

    • Run a blank shot first to preheat.



    • Employ a premium burr grinder.



    • Let it rest between shots a few seconds.



    • Expect café-level crema only if you have high-end pressure control.



If you are roasting your own beans—as I do with my Kafgar Roaster—you may need to grind a bit finer and maybe dose somewhat lower to match the behaviour of the thermoblock.

Go thermoblock if you must have speed above quality.

    • You daily make one to two espressos.



    • You’re good with minimal steaming.



    You want espresso without waiting ten minutes.



Particularly when combined with good beans and technique, thermoblocks are low risk + high reward if you’re just beginning your espresso adventure.


Chapter 9: The Reasons Behind Kafgar Roasters’ Boiler-Backed Machine Choice

Thermoblocks simply cannot keep up in terms of commercial settings.
