INTRODUCTION:

Back when I first started brewing espresso at home, I thought all
machines were the same. Then I heard the term thermoblock
and I had questions.

Was it better than a boiler? Faster? Weaker? Turns out, thermoblocks
are everywhere in modern coffee gear, and they have their strengths
(and quirks). Understanding them helped me choose the right machine
for my workflow.

In this guide, I’ll explain what a thermoblock is, how it compares
to a traditional boiler, and when it makes sense to choose one —
especially if you’re roasting and brewing in a café environment.

SECTION 1: WHAT IS A THERMOBLOCK?

A thermoblock is a type of heating system used in espresso and
coffee machines. It rapidly heats water on demand by running
it through a metal block with internal channels.

thermal stability needed for back-to-back shots or steaming.

SECTION 3: WHEN TO CHOOSE A THERMOBLOCK MACHINE

You might want a thermoblock if:

  • You brew espresso at home and want fast warmup

  • You have limited space

  • You don’t need high steam output

  • You care about energy efficiency


I use one in my cupping lab for speed. But in my café? I need the
power of a dual-boiler system.

SECTION 4: ROASTERS AND THERMOBLOCKS

As a roaster, I cup a lot. And sometimes I use thermoblock machines
for small-scale espresso evaluation.

But here’s the thing — thermoblock espresso can taste different.
If you’re evaluating roast development or espresso solubility, it’s
better to use temperature-stable machines.

That’s why I rely on precision from my Kafgar Roaster during
the roast — and use boiler-based machines for espresso QC.

SECTION 5: ADVANCED THERMOBLOCK SYSTEMS

Some high-end machines (like the Breville Dual Boiler or Lelit

So don’t write them off — modern thermoblocks are way better than
old-school versions.

CONCLUSION: THERMOBLOCKS ARE FAST, BUT NOT ALWAYS FINAL

Thermoblocks offer convenience, speed, and compact design — perfect
for home use or quick testing.

But for full control and repeatability (especially in espresso bars
or roasting labs), boiler systems are still king.

the goal is always the same: extract the best from every bean.
