I had been brewing espresso for over a year before I even knew what a thermoblock was. All I cared about was whether my shot tasted good—and when it didn’t, I blamed the grind, not the machine.

Then I upgraded to a prosumer machine with a real boiler, and boom—it hit me. The taste, the stability, the crema… it all changed. That’s when I went down the rabbit hole of heating systems, and thermoblöcke became a hot topic—pun intended.

 

So, What Is a Thermoblock?

A thermoblock is a metal heating block used in espresso machines to heat water quickly. Water is pushed through thin metal channels embedded inside the block, absorbing heat rapidly on the way to the brew head or steam wand.

In German, it’s called a thermoblöcke—a literal translation of “thermal block.”

Thermoblocks are known for:

  • Quick heat-up times (as fast as 30 seconds)

  • Compact size

  • Energy efficiency


They’re common in beginner espresso machines, super-automatic units, and small-footprint devices.

 

Thermoblock vs. Boiler – What’s the Difference?

Let’s break it down:

The Good: When Thermoblocks Shine

Here’s when I think thermoblöcke are actually awesome:

  • In travel espresso machines – You want fast and light, not bulky and complex.

  • For beginners – No waiting 10 minutes to pull a shot.

  • When space is tight – Kitchen counters thank you.


I had a thermoblock machine in my van during a road trip through southern Spain. Made solid Americanos and okay espresso. Wasn’t perfect, but it worked, and worked fast.

 

The Bad: The Limits of Thermoblocks

But let’s not sugarcoat it—they have limitations.

  • Temperature fluctuation: Water can be too hot or too cool, depending on flow rate.

  • Inconsistent shots: Especially if pulling multiple in a row.

  • Weak steam pressure: Frothing milk? Meh. Takes forever.


If you care about control, this is where thermoblocks start to feel like training wheels.

But for actual roasting? No way.

My Thermoblock Tips (If You Use One Anyway)

If you’ve got a thermoblock machine and want to get the best out of it:

  1. Pre-run water for 10 seconds – Heat the metal block properly.

  2. Temperature surf – Pull your shot mid-heat cycle, not right at the start or end.

  3. Short flush after steaming – Prevent overheating and mineral buildup.

  4. Use filtered water – Thermoblocks clog easier than boilers.


And lastly—accept its limits. It’s not a commercial machine. But it’s not garbage either.

 

Kafgar vs Thermoblock Systems? Not Even Close.

Okay, I have to say it.

When you move from a thermoblock espresso machine to a full roasting setup with Kafgar Roasters, it’s like trading a pocketknife for a samurai sword. Both can cut—but only one is built for mastery.

Final Thoughts: Thermoblöcke Have Their Place—But Know Their Limits

If you’re just starting out, or you need a fast espresso fix on the go, thermoblocks are fine. They’re convenient, quick, and can make a decent cup with good beans.

But if you’re chasing perfection, you’ll quickly outgrow them.

In roasting? They don’t even enter the room.

So whether you’re brewing or roasting, knowing how your heat system works is half the battle. And once you’re ready for full control and commercial-level quality, Kafgar is the name to remember.
