SECTION 1: WHEN WAS DECAF COFFEE INVENTED?

Decaf coffee was invented in 1903 by a German coffee merchant named Ludwig Roselius.

Legend has it:
One of his shipments arrived water-damaged, and he noticed the beans had lost their caffeine — but still retained flavor.

He worked with chemists to create a repeatable decaffeination process, and by 1905, he patented it as the first commercial method.

SECTION 2: THE EARLY DECAFFEINATION METHOD

Roselius’ original process used:

  • Steam to open the beans’ pores

  • A benzene wash to dissolve caffeine


Yes — benzene. A solvent we now know is carcinogenic.
